Sometimes it happens, that a good novel is made into a screen version, a movie, but it is very difficult for the director, to capture every single detail, and every single person, so that they appears exactly as in the novel. The most important is to capture the right mood and follow the story, so the other differences does not seam too big.

The movie Charly is an example of a movie based on a novel. This movie is based on the novel Flowers for Algernon. The story is about Charlie (called ‘Charly’ in the movie) who is mentally retarded. He gets a brain surgery that doubles his IQ, but in the end, all his intelligence increases and he becomes who he was before. There are some big differences from the novel to the movie, but the main story is still mostly the same. In the novel, the main character Charlie writes progress reports, but they are not even mentioned in the movie, instead Charly uses drawings.

All the way through the story, Charlie/Charly has several contact persons that follow his progress, the two doctors, who perform the surgery on Charlie/Charly and Miss Kinnian, who is his private teacher.

There are also differences in the way these persons act, and how their relationships with Charlie/Charly are. Both the doctors are more human and treat him like a human, and not just a guinea pig.. The relationship between Charly and Miss. Kinnian is more than just a teacher-student relationship; this is on of the largest differences, and it is also connected to that fact, that in the novel, Charlie has no social skills, even though he gains a lot of knowledge and develops a social consciousness, so that he can se how people are him and others like him.
