Hook: Is there such a thing as racism in a multicultural country?
Focusing: England is multicultural and that brings issues along. Minorities with different ethnic backgrounds can be discriminated because of their culture.
Thesis statement: The short story is by written Kate Nivison in 1993 and it takes place in a London suburb. It is about a woman of Pakistani descent who is exposed to the modern-day racism
The story takes place in a suburban area called Wanstead in London. Mainly it all occurs in a home of a Pakistani family. The story is told by Indrani a first-person narrator and that is why our sympathy lies with her. We hear about her thoughts and what she feels which makes us see every incident from her point of view. We can also see that the story is mainly a dialog between Indrani and the rat men “Your best hope is that you’ve got a few strays disturbed by cable laying or road works and they’re looking for somewhere to set up house he said…. And what is my worst hope?” I asked.” (p. 1 & 2, ll. 13-14 & 4). It can show us how they talk to each other and if what they say, could have another meaning or it could be something indirect. Indrani is insecure and worried of what other people might think. “She feels embarrassed about buying the traps and is afraid of what the other people at the shop might think” is said in the introduction. It could maybe be why she don’t realize the indirect racism she is exposed too from Barry. Indrani is this developing character because she is in denial of people’s prejudicial opinions about people from a different ethnic background, but in the end, she realizes that the opinions are a very real thing. “Oh yes, this time I knew exactly what he meant.” (p. 4, ll. 3). We finally see her get the indirect racism she has been exposed to throughout most of the story and we can see, she has developed.
