The Movie is about this person named Cecil Gaines and his journey through the history from a butler’s point of view. It all started with him and his family working at a cotton farm, but after the death of his father and his mother going crazy, he was assign by the woman of the house to be a “house nigga”. However, Cecil grew up and decided to move away. Later on, He had a family himself that consisted of him, his wife and his two sons. The oldest was named Louis and the other Charlie. Louis had a passion for fighting for the equal rights for coloured people, and therefore he joined “The Freedom Riders” at campus, and later on “The Black Panthers”. Meanwhile Charlie was off fighting the Vietnam War.Because of the little experience Cecil had of serving people, he was given the job as a butler at the White house, and ever since then, he served the following eight presidents.
Signs of racism in the movie
In the movie the man of the house had the power to take a woman against her will, and rape her without thinking about the consequences, and when her husband stood up for her, he was shout. Of course, the death and the rape was a problem, but the BIG problem here was that, every white man could get away with killing or hurting a colored person without being punished by the authorities.The other thing was that the coloured wasn’t really treated as humans, but as property instead. While a lot of them was working for the white people, they would never really notice them. First of all they weren’t allowed to talk at all, and secondly they wasn’t seen as real humans, but slaves or even just living housemaids that didn’t talk or smile but only served them.
