The short story “The Dutiful Daughter” by Saadat Hasan Manto, takes the form of a story within at story. By that it contains an outer story and an inner story. It was published in 1990 in English, but the original was published in 1948. The text is written by Saadat Hasan Manto (1912-1955) and he was a Pakistan author, born in what was then the British India. His writing includes both short story’s and play and many of his stories are about the division between India and Pakistan, which happened as a continuation of the British Empire releasing their Indian colonies.
The title “The Dutiful Daughter” is misleading, because the word “dutiful” mislead the reader into thinking that they are going to read a text about a daughter who obeys or are “dutiful” to her parents, but the text is actually the opposite of that. The title suggests how the old woman look at and sees her daughter, since she thinks that her daughter should be returning home from India. However, the title and the text are actually each other’s opposites because the old woman’s daughter ignores her mother and should not return home from India. She has chosen or accepted to be “abducted” and live her new life with her Indian husband and to take distance to her past life and culture.
