Setting: The short story (The Dutiful Daughter) by Saadat Hasan Manto is set right after the partition of former British India. The partition took place in 1947, when the country was divided two independent countries, India, and Pakistan. and the difficult conditions in refugee camps and volunteers’ efforts in both countries in 1948.
The story take place in India, in the different cities where the liaison officer helps volunteers find missing Pakistani women and children.

Narrator and point of view: the first person is an unnamed man who is likely to be of Pakistani ancestry given his conversation with the Pakistani liaison officer.
In the inner story, the first-person account remains, but the narrator changes, as the first narrator uses direct speech to report a story told to him by the liaison officer. The liaison officer then adopts the role of the narrator, telling a story about an old Pakistani woman looking for her daughter.
Style of language: the partition of former British India into India and Pakistan. Indian and Pakistani words such as Sikh or chaddar give the story an authentic air and help to evoke the setting. the narrators use mostly negative words in connection with the old woman and the effects of the partition: crazy, ragged, holocaust, asylum.
