“The hate u give”, directed by George Tillman Jr, is based on the best-selling young-adult novel by Angie Thomas. The film follows Starr Carter, a black sixteen-year-old student, well versed in code switching between the black community in Gardens Heights and the largely white prep school in Williamson neighborhood. Starr becomes galvanized to activism after she becomes the eyewitness of the murder of her childhood friend Khalil.
As the only witness, she is now in a very delicate situation where she must decide what she wants to do. Stand up on open screen and endanger the lives of the family, and her father’s life’s work, or remain an anonymous witness and let the police, and media have the last word.
The title of the movie derives from the famous rapper Tupac Shakur. He often quoted, ”Thug Life” which stands for “The hate you give little infants fucks everyone”, proposing that the negativity society chooses to give the youth, sprouts within them and later on will backfire when they decide to take the anger out on the world.
“The Hate U Give” is not about Khalil's death but yet, it is. It is about what you hear when a young black man has been shot by a police officer in the ghetto. Starr's white classmates hear a pusher has been shot and demonstrate against police violence just to get out of class. While the citizens in Garden Heights hear that another unarmed young man from their community has been shot by police, they begin demonstrating and making riots. For Starr, it is her childhood friend that she feels she has let down.
