An article by Andrew Marshall about the Tsunami on Banda Aceh island

On the 21th of December 2004 a massive Indian Ocean tsunami hit the indonesian coast, having a destructive impact in 14 countries and killing over 230.000 people. The tsunami was triggered by an 9,15-magnitute earthquake. Aceh was one of the worst hit places in Indonesia with over 166.000 people found missing or dead and causing homelessness by the thousands. The locals are still affected by the traumatizing experience of losing their friends, family and neighbors, to the devastating forces of nature.

The strength of the tsunami was so powerful that once a floating powerplant was thrown three miles ashore. The ship has now become a tourist attraction with surrounding buildings.

A local woman has learned to live without fear of a new earthquake. There’s a now anniversaries held in remembrance of the victims.

International financial help, given to eliminate the consequences of the tsunami, has given the region the opportunity to build a new hospital, an airport and also tourism is thriving.

The Indonesians have been struggling with civil war for decades. A positive effect of the natural disaster is the fact, that it has brought peace among the Indonesians. The war officially ended in 2005. The economy seems to be doing great as well. The region is however in danger of being struck by an earthquake again and therefore the government has invested in an tsunami early-warning system.
