What on earth would make a woman choose to stay with a man? Who doesn’t love her at all and who even cheats on her with several other women right in front of her?
This short story ‘Weekend’ written by Ann Beattie has two main characters Lenore and George. One major conflict between our two main characters is that they have two children together, live together and yet it seems like they don’t really have a relationship besides being ordinary roommates. George’s character is portrayed as this old, vain, alcoholic man who doesn’t seem to care about anything else but himself so therefore is not aware of what’s going on around him and who is also very sensible about getting old. All the while Leonora is being portrayed as a ‘simple’ woman who lets George walk all over her by letting him bring younger women back to their home in the weekends and this hurts her very much but she barely shows any emotions at all which leads George to think that she’s simpleminded while it’s completely opposite. Her character is revealed to be a lot more complex later on in the story than what we had assumed in the very beginning of the story.
