Through the maoris lives they often have ceremonies for the gods. At every ceremony they dress up in their finest clothes and jewels. All ages are included in the ceremony. They have tribal dances in which they reminisce about their legendary past and their ancestors.

Their looks - tattooing

The maoris have only few ornaments. The most important adornments are body painting and tattooing. Every tattoo is a symbol. The tattoos had to be effected in stages because it was so painful. The tattoos were carved into the skin with a small chisel. The social rank is shown by the tattoos, was a symbol of dignity. Other ornaments could for example be pendants, and the finest were made of bone or nephrite.

How are they treated by the white population?

Until recently they have been treated very badly.

First the white population killed them, and stole their land. Now it’s getting better, especially because there’s focus on that they aren’t being treated like the white people.

We’ve found a leaked police report, about that the police mistreats the maoris.

In the report it there’s a list over abuses of power against the maoris. Both violence and sexual actions have been used against the maoris and when they went to the police complaints authority, the police told them that they had no proofs. Now the police have made a campaign to get a better relationship with the maoris.
