West side story is a modern representation of Shakepear’s “Romeo and Juliet”. Set

in the 1950’s the musical explores the rivalry between two New York gangs, the

White Jets and the Latino Sharks. They respectively hate each other and battle each

other for territory in their neighborhood.

The song “America”

This song is sung by a group of Puerto Rican girls who love America and a group of boys

who think the opposite. The song portrays the differences between white and non-white

Americans. In the song they debate about the benefits of living in the US.

Why do people immigrate from Puerto Rico to America?

They choose to immigrate because of the poverty in their country, also because

of unemployment. They want a better life and future for them and their children.

What reality met them? What did they expect?

The immigrants probably expected the perfect life in a big house with lots of room.

They met a country where they would experience racism, and where it would be hard

to find a job, and where everyone except wealthy people struggle.

Conclusion

The girls point out the wonderful sides of living in America, but the boys always

show the hard reality and that the life for immigrants in America isn't easy.’
