The 6th Amendment guarantees rights to individuals accused of crimes. It includes:
7th Amendment
The right to a speedy and public trial – trials must not be delayed unnecessarily or held in secret.
The right to an impartial jury – jurors must be unbiased.
The right to be informed of the charges – the accused must be told what they are being charged with.
The right to confront witnesses – the accused has the right to cross-examine witnesses testifying against them.
The right to compel witnesses to testify in their favor – the court can require witnesses to provide testimony that may help the accused.
The right to legal counsel – if the accused cannot afford a lawyer, the state must provide one.
The 7th Amendment deals with civil trials, not criminal cases. It states that:
The right to a jury in civil cases – if a lawsuit involves a dispute over a certain amount of money (originally $20), the parties have the right to have the case decided by a jury.
Jury decisions cannot be overturned easily – a judge cannot simply override a jury’s decision in civil cases.
