Will Freeman is an unemployed bachelor, he is in his late thirties, and lives in London. He spends his time, shopping, listening to music, and getting haircuts. And then he goes on dates, he tries to hook up with as many women as possible. Will is living the sweet life, because of his father who wrote a hit Christmas song and Will is still making money off it. One day Will joins a single parents group called “SPAT”, because he wants to meet single moms, who accordingly to Will is very easy to have a nonbonding relationship with. He pretends to have a son called Ned. Will manages to get a date. On there date, Will discovers that his date Suzie, has brought her best friends kid Marcus too. Marcus is a kind of weird kid; he is a vegetarian, Joni Mitchell loving, outsider. On there date, Marcus accidently kills a duck by throwing bread at it, Will covers for Marcus, and they become friends. Will drops Suzie off, at Marcus moms place, they discover that Fiona (Marcus’s mom), has tried to kill herself with an overdose. She survives but Marcus is sad, he thinks that if his mother finds a boyfriend, she won’t be so depressed. Marcus persuades Will to take Fiona out for dinner, but it doesn’t work out. But Marcus starts to visit Will at his flat, every day after school, and Will hates it. Marcus discovers that Will doesn’t really have a son, so he uses it against him, so he can come and visit Will every day after school. Fiona does not approve of this agreement, but that doesn’t stop Marcus from seeing Will after school. Marcus and Will become friends, and Will tries to make Marcus a little more cool. Marcus becomes friends with a popular girl, and Will finds a girlfriend, who he really cares about, but he still pretends to have a son, but this time it is Marcus. Marcus agrees to help Will, and they are closer than ever. Will and his girlfriend breaks up, and Will are very sad. Fiona is depressed again, and Marcus wants to sing in the school play to cheer her up. Will knows that Marcus can’t sing, so he tries to stop him, but it’s too late. Marcus has entered the stage, and Will has no other chance than to sing with him. In the end Will spends Christmas with Marcus’s family, and for the first time Will feels like he has a family.
