Analyse af 'How the Nurse Feels' af Greg Changnon

This short story “How the Nurse Feels” is taking place in Winetka in the USA. The main character is the 15-year-old Tess, who is an ordinary high school teenager, she is living with both her parents. Tess’ father is a priest and the mother owns a fabric store, which she hopes Tess will take over some day. At Tess’ high school she takes part in a play. The play is Shakespeare’s famous “Romeo and Juliet” where she is playing Juliet’s nurse. Tess is having problems with finding her own identity. She tries to escape from who she is by acting, because it helps her feel like she has a different personality and being another person. “I have to feel what it’s like in somebody else’s skin.” She is struggling with the nurse character, because she can’t empathize with the feelings of the nurse, because Tess never felt sorrow or loss of someone. But that changes when the guy Tiger De Soto dies, because Tess was falling in love with him. When he dies she is able to play the nurse. “Juliet is lying before me and I see all this and I think, now, right now, I am the nurse”
