Belfast is a divided city, we are told at the start of the Mickybo and Me.
The two 8 year old boys living in the never-the-twain-shall-meet communities on either side of the bridge, no such divisions exist.
The beginning starts with Mickeybo who is running from some bad guys, because he has stolen their ball. Johnjoe was eating ice cream with his daddy, but suddenly his bus came, and he had to go to work.
Mickeybo jumped into Johnjos head, and jailed “RUN, the old man has got a knife” Jonjo ran after Mickeybo, he overran Mickeybo. Mickeybo was in chock, because he was the fastest runner in his class. It was impossible that Johnjo ran faster than him.
Mickeybo and Johnjo became friends, and they went to the cinema together to watch ‘Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid’. At the cinema they saw Johnjos father kissing with a woman. But they didn’t say anything. The next day they went to the cinema again, to see the same movie. After the movie the two boys planned to act like Mickey was Butch Cassidy and Johnjo was Sundance kid.
They were in the old mans house. They got really frightened, because the old man was dead. Mickeybo discovered a gun, and he took it. The bad boys were outside. Mickeybo starts shooting at them, the bad boys got frightened and ran away.
