From an objective point of view I will start out by explaining what fantasy is. This is necessary in order to completely understand the genre in general and the thoughts behind it.
People believed in witchcraft and other sorts of magical stories in the earlier days but now it is obvious to us, which creatures are real and whom are unreal. The reason people believed in the supernatural was because there was not an explanation, the only explanation there was, was inexplicable. Nowadays you can find explanations on every theory because of science.
Fantasy stories often unfold in worlds that are not realistic, and are therefore impossible. But sometimes fantasy stories unfold in a world that seems normal and kind of like our own. This was fantasy explicitly denies what we all know about our world, when they use this type of plot. These two observations can also be mixed; it could be a normal world with a door or closet, which leads the narrator into a fantasy world, like the fantasy movie Narnia: the lion, the witch and the wardrobe. The setting is really important, when creating a fantasy movie or story. Everything has to be well described in order to visualize the imaginary world. Fantasy as a genre acts like a substitute for imagination. Imagination is en general has the ability to automatically visualize the consequences of certain actions.
