The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas is a 2008 drama film based on the novel by the Irish writer John Boyne. The film explores the horror of the Second World War concentration camp through the eyes of two eight year old boys. One of the boys is son of the camp’s Nazi commandant and the other a Jewish inmate.

The main character is the 8 year old typical boy, Bruno. He is happy and curious. He lives in Berlin with his rich parents and his four year older sister, Gretel. Bruno’s dad is a soldier close to Hitler and when he gets promoted to camp commandant for an extermination camp, the family moves out to the countryside in a big house. Until this Bruno and his sister are living in ignorance. They don’t know anything about the horrors of the war but it changes quickly.

Bruno is bored in the house and he misses his friends. He and his sister get home education. The teacher, Mr. Liszt is very interested in the Nazi ideology and Gretel thinks it’s very interesting, but not Bruno. He is more interested to find someone to play and hang around with. Bruno wants to be a world explorer. The whole world is his playground.
