First of all I would like to thank The University of London who has invited me to give all of you students and teachers, a speech on African Americans in the US. I would also like to thank all of you students who have met up today to hear my speech. It’s always great to see so many fresh and young faces. I don’t hope that my speech and I will bore you, but I hope that you will find it very interesting and that it will give you “food for thought”.
My name is Ronald Fryer, I am 30 years old and I teach at Harvard University. Four months ago I won tenure as an economics professor at Harvard. I actually used to study at the University, but the president of Harvard hectored me to join the faculty – which, as you can see, I couldn’t say no to.
Like I mentioned in the beginning, the broad topic is “The conditions of the African Americans today”, and I would like to develop the following main points. First I would like to account for the conditions of the African Americans. Then I would like to comments on the reasons for the current situation focusing on education, family background and the labour market. Last but not least what can I, you and we all do to narrow the gap between black and white Americans in the future.
