Todd Anderson: He is new to Welton. He is expected to fill his brother’s position. He is timid but by the end of the novel he gains confidence.

Neil Perry: Neil appears to be everything Todd is not. He does not have to fill any shoes, he is not new at school and he has a lot of friends. But Neil’s father expects him to become a doctor and he has planned Neil’s future against his will.

Knox Overstreet: Seems sure of himself but is still experimenting. He wants to have someone to relate to.

Charlie Dalton: Changes his name to Nuwanda. He is very cocky and rebellious. Writes an article in the school paper pushing for Welton to admit girls, which is against the schools idea of acceptable. Tries to experiment with girls, but is not as successful as planned. He wants to be more successful socially (mostly with women).

Mr. Keating: He is an alumnus of Welton. He feels that Welton did not prepare him for life as much as he would have liked. He feels that the students need to be prepared for life, not just for college (what the school wants). He is idolized by most of his students. Rebels against the school’s curriculum and tries to inspire his students to think for themselves.
