Apartheid was a system used to legally segregate different kind of humans - such as separating blacks from whites.
Today theres no problems at all with racism in South Africa, at least not on the same level as back in 1948. At that time people were divided into different racial groups. Blacks, whites, colored and asians were forcibly separated from each other and some groups gained more rights than others. For an example, the whites were the dominant ones. They controlled everything and the worst of it was that it wasn't even their country! It belonged and still belongs to the South Africans! The white people just came, thought "Oh hey, those negroes seem very primitive, why not conquer their land? They seem like they need a leader with great superiority!" and gave themselves the rights to immigrate to South Africa and later on taking away human rights from the blacks.
"Everyone is entitled to all the rights and freedoms set forth in this Declaration, without distinction of any kind, such as race, colour, sex, language, religion, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status."
- The blacks had no rights at that time. They couldn't vote, they had no influence on the area they lived in, medical help where divided so white people had white doctors - and black people had black doctors. At that time there wasn't many well-educated doctors that were black, not compared to the amount of white doctors. There were many other rights the blacks didn't have, and according to the United Nations, all this was against their declaration of human rights!
