A trip to Australia

OC On the Go ­ An Armchair Travel Experience Down Under

Roughly three weeks ago, in mid-January, i was informed by my father, that we, meaning just him and I, were going to Australia. He said that he suddenly felt like taking a couple of weeks off from work, as it was very stressing, so he had just ordered two tickets to Sidney for two weeks. I immediately went to pack, as we were leaving the very next day (Monday)! We arrived at Billund early in the morning, as our flight was taking off at 8'ish. It took a painfully long time for the plane to arrive, and I was bored completely out of my mind during the trip. We arrived in Sidney Kingsford Smith airport late Wednesday, and we immediately got out our bags, called a taxi (which cost 20 Australian dollars) and went straight to our small, but really comfortable hotel. Went I went to bed that night, I had no idea what to expect the next two weeks: my dad hadn't told me what we were going to do, and I'm not even sure he had anything specifically planned out. But that didn't bother me, I was just looking forward to experiencing a country I'd never been in before. Even though I hadn't been in Sydney before, I did know a little bit about it's history and such. For example, I knew that the most famous attraction in Sidney was the work of a Dane, I knew that there was roughly 5 million people living in the town and that it is the biggest city in Australia., and I knew, that it used to be a colony for England. My father woke me up the next morning, as I was so tired out from the traveling, that I didn't wake up on my own. He told me, that he thought it would be a good idea, to take a look around Sydney, see what attractions there were and such. So, that's we did; we went for a walk in the nice weather, and went around town to find something we could do, or we could look at. We quickly found a McDonalds restaurant, and we had a sneaky feeling, that we would be spending quite a lot of time in there. We actually also went and got a quick tour of the insides of the Sydney Opera House, which, although I'm not even the slightest bit interested in Opera, was quite fascinating. The Sydney Opera house was completed in 1973, and as mentioned before, the architect behind the project, was a Dane, Jørn Utzon. The building is perhaps most famous for it's 6 signature erect-standing "shells", Of course, we didn't walk by foot the whole time, as Sydney is a huge city, so our vehicle of choice was more often than not a taxi. I think we spent around 250 Australian dollars that day alone on transport, and the tour of the opera house wasn't cheap either. Within the first day of being in Sydney, we'd use 400 dollars ­ quite a feat! That wasn't made any better by the fact that we went out to eat at a restaurant (which was quite expensive). I had lobsters, while my dad ate tuna. Because of it's status as an island, fish and other animals living in the sea, are very regularly eaten in Australia. The next couple of days, and actually most of our trip, swept right past us. We went to museums, went out for dinner, went to the Sydney Zoo, and did all kinds of fun stuff. One We only had a couple of days left until our flight departed from the airport, and there was one last thing my dad wanted to see before we left for Denmark ­ a rugby match. You see, my dad's a former rugby player (amateur of course), and he's loved the sport. So he wanted to go see a match, and where better, than in Australia, where they hold the sport in very high regard?! So we did, and to be honest, it was very, very cool, and keep in mind, that I know absolutely nothing about the sport's rules (or teams and players for that matter). The match we saw were the Waratahs, which were from Sydney, vs the Brumbies from Canberra, the Australian capital. The atmosphere in the stands was amazing, and the play on the field was very intense and exiting, so it was a great experience all in all. Unfortunately the Waratahs lost, but the home teams supporters kept their head held high, and took the loss in a good way. That was the very last thing we did before going home.
