Dirty Dancing: Filmanalyse og personlig refleksion

The movie takes place in 1963. The sweet 17 year old girl Frances also called “Baby”, a little daddy’s girl, goes on a vacation with her family to New York’s Catskill Mountains, in the summer. Baby’s family is strict and is very respectful. She expects to go on to a college, join the Peace Corps and save the world before she marries a doctor, just like her father. Unexpectedly, she starts to like the camp’s dance instructor, Johnny, whose background is very different from hers. Then Johnny’s dance partner Penny gets pregnant, and Baby unlikely lies to her father to get money for an illegal abortion for Penny. Baby then fills in as Johnny’s dance partner for a special dance program. Johnny becomes Baby’s teacher, and therefore they have to spend a lot of time together, and so they fall in love. But then Penny gets seriously sick after her abortion, and Baby have to call her father, who manage to save Penny’s life. The consequents by doing that is, that Baby’s father founds out what she has been doing. And what she has spent the money on, that he gave her. He forbids her to hang out with those people, but she doesn’t listen. She sneaks out to see Johnny later, and spends the night with him. The next morning when Baby sneaks out again, a jealous vacationer who also wanted to spend the night with Johnny, but got rejected, sees her and in payback tells the manager of the hotel, that she saw Johnny steeling last night, knowing he wouldn’t tell where he was. When Baby hears that, she bravely tells where and what Johnny was doing last night, to prove his innocence. When Baby says where she was last night, her father gets very angry and disappointed. Although Baby confirms Johnny’s innocence, he gets fired and banned from participating in the last final performance, at the last night on the vacation. At the last night, to the finale performance, where Baby’s older sister sings, Johnny returns to tell everyone how much Baby has changed his life and to have a final dance with her, which he was banned from. They dance together, and Baby’s father founds out that Johnny wasn’t responsible for Penny’s pregnancy, which he had though all along, and that he has to accept that his beloved daughter is becoming a woman and that she will always love him.
