The story is about the relationship between a man and his wife. The wife is on the phone talking to an unknown person. The man is thinking and reflecting on their life together and how he feels unnoticed and how it would not matter if he left her or if he stayed together with her.
He feels invisible and he is getting sick of it. Everybody is taking him for granted, by all the things he have done for his wife his wife’s mother, friends and sister. Nobody have ever called and asked him how he feels. He is sitting in his chair and having an inner monologue where he tries figuring out how to get her attention and how to tell her how hi fells without being or seeming completely selfish. He misses the old days with her, where they knew each other, could read each other minds, laugh together and have a goodtime during the everyday life. His proposal to make their life as it had been is to make her laugh by telling her a joke.
2. Characterize the protagonist
The protagonist is a man who has a hard time figuring out what has gone wrong in the relationship with his wife and children. He feels overseen and taken for granted, but still he is only discussing it in his mind with his own thoughts and not with his wife. In fact he have never had a fight or a discussion with his wife, which make him seem more like a coward and henpecked. He fails to be a real man at that point. The protagonist can be characterized as afraid and easily to manipulate. It is shown by the stories he tells “the errands of mercy” and the fact that he never had fought or discussed with his wife. The television which he mentions and they have upgraded is his only act and quick result to save their relationship which he desperately wants to do. He is a man who is sick of everything and makes problems in his safe, calm and nuclear family instead of being thankful for having what he has. The protagonist is a person, who does not judge other people, and he never did, it is a rare thing and it is maybe the only positive thing about him and yet it shows that he does not care about anything there is going on around him, he is just adapts the environment.
