The Amish history began in the 16th century in Switzerland. It started with a schism within a group of Swiss in 1693. They were Anabaptists, which means that they believe in that you should be batiste as adult again. The name come of Jakob Ammann, (ca. 1656 —c. 1730), a Swiss leader., who also was the founder of The Amish. They broke away from the Swiss Mennonites primarily because they thought there was a lack of shunning. The Amish started immigrant to USA because you could have a free religion there, and there was free land. They settle down Pennsylvania and lather in Ohio Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa and in Canada. Nowadays there is no one left in Europe, but live in USA, Canada, Central America and South America. Even though the spread, most of them still live Pennsylvania, Ohio etc. They speak Pennsylvania Dutch and English. Through the times the number of Amish had doublet every 20 years, and today there is nearly 250.000.
Their believes
The Amish have a very strict form of Christianity. It directs them to hard work and the simple life. Therefore they don’t accept modern things. They think it will go to fast and they will get stressed, if they had them. The bible is importing for the Amish, and they live after it as much as possible. They don’t believe in war or violence. They also think that big families are a blessing from god, and it’s not usually to see a family with 7-10 people. You can only get married with one who also is Amish. The Amish gets batiste as adults, because they don’t think that children can give a meaningful accept. That means that when the young people can decide if they stay or leave the Amish when they grow up. If they leave, this also apply if you leave later on, they will be shunned and excommunicated. But it is less than 1 out of 5 of the young people who do that. You can also be shunned if you break some of their laws. The Amish live after their community’s rules called ordnung. The ordnung varies from group to group, and some allow more than others. Amish families are very conservative, it is the man who decides everything and everyone in the house respects him.
