Link starts out with introducing his nickname, and that people avoid him and his kind. When he says: “We are living proof that everything’s not all right...” He is referring to people’s opinion about life, and the fact that they do not acknowledge poor people. He wants people to open up their eyes for the vast problems in today’s society.
People in Bradford were not used to homeless people, so they would avoid him even more, than they would do in London. The police kept on moving him around from place to place too. Therefore he neither got much sleep nor much money. He was unable to sleep at his sister’s house, since her boyfriend perceived Link as a kind of intruder in their premises. The boyfriend, Chris, never said anything straight forward to Link, but Link could sense Chris’s irritation.
When Link said: time to move on, he meant he had to find a new path in life; he was no longer welcome at his sister’s house; not even in his own hometown.
Link had seen many movies with dossers obtaining casual work, for instance dishwashing or sweeping. Besides, Link couldn’t imagine a large city as London, where even a part-time job would be completely impossible.
