Child soldiers are most critical in Africa where the children at the age of nine have been in conflicts while armed. But it does not all happen in Africa but also in Sierra Leone, Liberia, Sudan, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan and Burma.

In Sierra Leone children fight for RUF (The revolutionary United Front) and the pro government. The children are abducted but the soldiers and forced to kill or they risk their own life. In combat they are often on drugs so they would not get scared but calm instead. The older soldiers are always in the back, while the youngest are at the front line.

If they disobey orders they will most likely get tortured or killed and it is the same if they try to escape. The former child soldiers even though they are most likely abducted and threated for their life many of them cannot go home after their ‘duty’ because they are afraid of being ostracised from their village, because of the many life’s they have taken also among their own village.

Besides that the children are very traumatised when or if they get out of the war. Because of the drugs they are also now addicted, while there is no family left so they need to start a whole new life afterwards. Most of the children have no chance of getting a normal life of course there is counselling sessions but many do not even know that they exist.
