The story Irregularities is a womans telling about how her irregular heartbeat makes her boss attracted to her. True beauty lies in natures mistakes (p. 10, l. 102), he tells her. These words mark the beginning of an affair that leads to the concieving of a baby, a baby which is lost when she is bearly three months along. The woman never gets to tell her boss about the baby, and finally she loses his affection.
The short story is written with a first person narrator. As a result, the reader is placed inside the narrators mind and follows her stream of thoughts. The language is therefore very ordinary, with a lot of interposed remarks and colloquial language, for example: ...he ought to (p. 8, l. 12). The story is shaped as if one is following her for a period of time: The beginning is abrupt and written in past tense which gives it an introducing effect. After this, the actual story begins in present tense. In between this occures a flashback, in which the reader understands how the affair beween the narrator and Dr. Soleander began.
And as much as I’ve read in these various women’s magazines about pleasing a man, I couldn’t seem to please him, the one that really mattered. I can see his logic. (p. 11, ll. 137-139).
