Analysis and interpretation of ”Irregularities” written by Courtney Jones
The main character in the story works as an administrative assistant at a cardiac care unit and she has an affair with her boss, James Soleander, M.D. They have sex one time, that we hear of, in his office and she gets pregnant, but she doesn’t tell him. She expects him to notice it by his own, but that never happens. She has deeper feelings for him than he has for her. Every time he isn’t in his office she goes in there and smells his cashmere sweaters and wears them around the office and she loves to hear his voice on the Dictaphone. She often thinks about how nice it would be to be married to him and how good they would be together.
She has an irregularity that Soleander is very fond of and that’s her heartbeat. It beats in a very strange way and he loves to listen to it. After they were together in his office he sat and listened to it for several minutes and it is the thing he likes most about her. He always falls for peoples different irregularities and he loves her heartbeat. “”There’s art in imperfection,” he said, finally parting his lips and breathing in slowly. “True beauty lies in nature’s mistakes””
