Text: From Irregularities, a short story by Courtney Jones published in Best New American Voices, Harcourt 2003.
A characterization of the narrator and Dr Soleander: Narrator: The narrator is presumably a young woman who works as secretary or an administrative assistant to Dr. James Soleander, who is a married male heart nurse. The narrator/secretary is in love with the boss. Dr. Soleander and secretary has affair and the secretary gets pregnant. She cannot tolerate onions under pregnancy and obtain most of her knowledge about life from woman’s magazines. She appears very inactive and rather insecure about herself, she is letting magazines and men control her life. I consider her as being let down many times before. She also has an irregular heartbeat.Dr. James Soleander:He is a businessperson who cheats on his wife with the co-worker. He is a well-dressed male; he often wears cashmere sweaters and nice shoes, wealthy, powerful and he is not interested in a serious relationship. He is a married man and a heart doctor. Told by our narrator he is a very forgetful, furthermore he is attracted to his secretary’s irregular heartbeat. He is married with another woman, while having sex with his co-worker.
