The narrator of the story is a young woman. We do not know the name of the narrator. She works as a secretary but she calls it an administrative assistant. She has an affair with her boss Dr. Soleander and she gets pregnant with Dr. Soleander. But he does not know about it. She seems a bit naive and not very self-confident. It seems like she needs the attentions that Dr. Soleander gives her. She needs to feel important and that someone needs her.
She looks up to her boss. She thinks that he has the perfect life. She tells us about his perfect shoes and his cashmere sweaters. She also tells us about her irregularities. That she has an irregular heartbeat. And she also says that Dr. Soleander adores her irregularities. “Dr. Soleander is attracted to my heart. He’s become addicted to my irregular heartbeat, the strange thmp, thmp…” Perhaps she overreacts a little bit. I do not think that he is not addicted to her heartbeat. I think that the narrator put more in the relationship than Dr. Soleander does.
She used to be a fun woman. But now her friends are calling her old. “I mean, all my Administrative Assistant friends insist that I’ve been no fun at all since I’ve quit going out. I’ve become old they say.” They call her old after she thinks that she is pregnant.
