“Irregularities” is a short story written by Courtney Jones and published in 2003. In the short story we follow the life of a woman working as an administrative assistant at a cardiac care unit. She struggles with the themes of unhappy love, misery, denial and failure. The woman had an affair with her employer, James Soleander, and apparently she is now pregnant. She wants to tell Dr. Soleander about the pregnancy, but for some reason she has not managed to.
The pivotal point in the short story is the female narrator and her short “relationship” with her employer, Dr. Soleander. Their relationship cannot be described as an affair, because of its short existence, and due to the lack of actual love from both sides.
Apparently Dr. Soleander’s interest in the female narrator is due to her heart irregularities. “You have the most beautiful heartbeat I’ve ever heard.” At least this is what he makes the female narrator believe. However, much tells us that he is just using her, having sexual intentions, and is driven by lust, and not love to her heart irregularities or her as a person. We also se this, by the way he gives her presents such as ergonomically correct office equipment. Furthermore, the fact that he is a well educated man, while she is an administrative assistant supports the theory that he, as belonging to the upper class, is using the rabbles women. This also explains, why he leaves her after their conference-trip and retreats to his wife Donna.
