It is not easy to deal with the following problems of an affair, particularly not if the result is pregnancy with a married man.

All the frustrations of finding yourself, dealing with an unexpected pregnancy and jealousy, are some important points in the short story “Irregularities” by Courtney Jones.

The person, who needs to deal with all the problems and frustrations, is the young woman, who works as an administrative assistant in a cardiac care unit. She is pregnant after an affair with her married boss James Soleander, a doctor on the cardiac care unit.

Her affair did not start like many others interoffice affairs do. But it was her irregular heartbeat that he fell attracted to.

The life as a pregnant new mother seems enormous, and sometimes the narrator forgets her baby inside. The fact that she is pregnant causes huge changes in her life. She used to like onions, but the react of the baby is strongly negative, and she has to quit eating onions.

She is very confused how to deal with the pregnancy and she tries to deal with the mixed feelings, with the woman’s magazine as a consultant. The magazine is a symbol of her uncertainty and her inexperience. She is very naïve, and she tries to follow the advises -how to please a man- without any luck. Her self-confidence is low, and the fact that she does not tell James Soleander about the pregnancy, is a sign of lack of self-confidence, and it makes her nervous.
