Artificial intelligence is computer based things that react and think on their own (often connected with nanotechnology). It doesn’t necessarily have to be robots, but it’s a good example. Artificial intelligence is actually in this world right now, but just in a lower stage of what you see in movies. The present stage of AI is mostly “robots” with software installed inside them. The software can make them move different parts of their body. They have no self-control or anything like that. Scientists have tried to simply implement a human brain, with neurons connecting to different parts of the robot, but with no luck of success. They thought it would be kind of straight forward 50 years ago, but it was a lot harder than they thought. So basically they are kind of useless for us right now. There are many scientists who are working with the subject, but up until now they still haven’t invented the robots we see in the sci-fi movies.

The article about robots from the newspaper is really fascinating. It shows how far we humans have come with our technology. The robots resemble us normal human beings, by covering their metallic skin with cream colored silicone. Scientists from Japan talk about having robots serve as playmates, pets and social workers. They still have a big flaw though. They have no form for humanoid communication. They are able to speak 4 languages and say various kinds of phrases (30,000), but they don’t have any form of interaction. For example you can’t have a conversation with a robot in a mall, where there are tons of people. They say in the article, that the robot won’t be able to notice what you say, when there is a lot of background noise around it. The scientists have tried other communication methods, such as wireless ID tags, but the most effective way turns out to be robots talking to each other, and sharing their information.
