In Denmark we have many different traditions, the longest and most popular holiday celebration is Christmas. We celebrate Christmas on the 24th December.
Some go to church on Christmas Day, my family and I are just at home, we get delicious breakfast and are in a happy Christmas spirit. Electric lights are lit all the time, inside the houses, and out on the streets. We celebrate Christmas with a huge pleasure and an explosion of light!
In Danish churches, we celebrate the four Advents before Christmas with special services. In my home Advent is celebrated with a beautiful decoration Advent wreath with white or red candles, our candles are red. The wreath is hung above or set on the dining room table. First Sunday of Advent turned the first light. The ritual continues Sunday after Sunday, until the fourth Sunday before Christmas is coming and all four candles are lit together. Every Sunday before Christmas, I get an Advent gift from my parents. It may be different what I get, it could be anything, stuff like clothes or makeup.
In Denmark we have a so called Advent calendar, numbered with 24 gates. Each day leading up to Christmas, you open the door that corresponds to the day you have. Behind the door there are some chocolate, other sweets or a toy. Although it is very small gifts I think, it makes the waiting for Christmas more bearable. Some of these calendars are store bought while others are homemade. Once I got a homemade from my grandma, I think it was very fun because I didn’t knew what where hiding in the small presents.
