Christmas is one of the most well known and most celebrated tradition worldwide, the only holiday as is as much celebrated is new years eve.
Most people mean that, the reason for celebrating Christmas is to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. All Danish people think so. Some professors and the well known genius Isaac Newton argued that the date of Christmas was selected to correspond with the winter solstice. The winter festivities had taken place as far back as 4000 years ago.
There are different opinions about what day Jesus was born, and therefore also about what day to celebrate Christmas. The British and Americans are celebrating Christmas at December the 25th. In Denmark we are celebrating Christmas the day before, at December the 24th. The winter solstice is also at the 25th and as I mentored before the Christmas was selected to correspond to this day. In Denmark we are celebrating Christmas In the evening, but in England and USA, they celebrate the holiday in the morning.
Earlier Christmas were only celebrated by Christian people, nowadays it is celebrated by many non-Christians to. Because gift-giving and several other aspects of the holiday is such lovely things that the non-Christians like the holiday even though they not believe in Jesus Christ.
