It is just another day at the Brooks’ residence when Philip and Ann hear a knock on the door. It is not an ordinary houseguest. In fact it is detective Sergeant Simms from CID. The detective questions Philip Brooks about his journey home from work. Mr Brooks explains politely that he took the train home as usual. The detective then asks Philip if he owns a poetry book and a black briefcase. Finally, the detective informs the couple that at six pm a mother of two girls claims that her daughters were sexually assaulted on the train, and that they had described the man as being Mr Brooks. This accusation startles the married couple, and Philip uses this opportunity to wind up his wife by filling her with doubt. Ann becomes infuriated and questions Philip about the incident and she too accuses him of being guilty. Philip knows the accusations are false, so he remains calm and collected though out the whole enquiry. Hours later they receive a call from detective Sergeant Simms that he was falsely accused by the two girls, and that the while thing was a joke. Ann then claims that she never doubted him and carries on as if nothing had happened.
