William Wallace was a Scottish liberator, who wanted freedom in Scotland. When William was born in the year 1272 his mother died, and when he was seven years old he lost his father and brother. They were killed by the English.
At that time Scotland had no king. The old king died without a daughter or a son. The English King, Edward I, wanted to choose a new king for Scotland, but the Scottish nobles wanted to choose their own ruler, so there was war between the two countries. Many years later William rode to Lanark. Lanark was a village of rough streets and stone houses, a market for local farmers, a place for people to meet. Market day was a good day for the English rulers, ‘because when the Scottish people were enjoying themselves, there was no fighting. People watched at William as he rode towards them. They recognized him. They were William fathers old friends. William was coming back to his fathers farm. He came back to be a farmer and to have a family.
