The American Dream: Schwarzenegger og Wallechinsky

The American dream according to Arnold Schwarzenegger is that anyone who is willing to put in the hard work and contribute something to the country can achieve the American dream. He starts out by telling how he grew up in Austria, where if he did well he could get a job as a policeman like his father.

When he first came to USA he knew he had to take speech lessons and get rid of his accent if he wanted to make it in Hollywood, which he gladly did. Considering the countries that surrounded Austria where he grew up that didn’t have the right to vote, he was very interested in also participating in the local politics. He says that he feels that many Americans that have lived in America their whole life take that right for granted, he also says that many of the people that has done something great for the world, came to America but wasn’t raised there. If they had been they wouldn’t be able to appreciate the rights that followed being an American citizen.

David Wallechinsky, Is the American dream still possible?

The original American dream was about coming to America and making quite a lot of money, at least enough so you financial stability for you and your family. While lately if you ask people now, it is more about becoming famous, a lot of Americans have somewhat lowered their expectations about the American dream. It is no longer about financial security and having enough money, it is simply enough to get your children through the education system, even if it means that you have to take several loans and put yourself in debt. They don’t expect other people to get them what they need; it is your own job to make sure that your kids are going (hopefully) to be able to take care of you when you get old.
