"Ironweed" is a movie about homeless people, who lives in New York. But it is mainly about two people, called Francis Phelan (Jack Nicholson) and Helen Archer (Meryl Streep).Francis is an earlier baseball player, who had a house, a wife called Annie Phelan, three children, where one of them was a newborn baby son called Gerald. A happy marriage, but it all went wrong when Francis was changing his son's diaper. Francis lost his son out of his arms, and the son dropped dead. Francis felt miserable, and he thought that his wife would call the police. So he left his life behind, started to drink and went to live on the streets.
On the streets, he met a woman called Helen. They lived together in a rented apartment, on and off. But they both ended back on the streets again, because they did not have enough money for the rent. For 22 years, he lived on the street. He wandered about in New York, seeking nourishment His drinking haunted him, and he saw ghosts sometimes.
Francis had a friend called Rudy who has cancer. They were very good friends, and they often met at a mission, which provided free food and water. In his childhood, was protesting against the payment of the bus drivers. He accidentally killed a man, and that have haunted him since too.
