If Only: Summary og historieafslutning

Summary: Polly Miller is an Amish girl whose family have had to move to Texas to make money in order to pay off their farm in Ohio. Polly have two brothers called Ben and Levi, and two sisters called Sara and Effie. In the story Sara and Effie and Polly’s parents have gone back to Ohio, to visit their family, which leaves Polly, Ben, Levi and the family’s farmhand Tom alone in Texas. Polly only has one friend, who is an “englisch” girl at Polly’s age, called Rose Ann. Rose Ann and Polly were not allowed to be together normally, but at this time, Polly’s parents is not home, so they decide to be together, and they dress Polly up with a dress, make-up and nice shoes. The farmhand, Tom sees this, and fall in love with Polly. After several dates they decide to go out to a lake, and here, Tom proposes. This end terrible, Polly rejects, and runs away from Tom and was bitten by a snake.

Ending story:Tom lifted Polly over to the car, while she was still quivering."Are you okay?" he asked, after he found some blankets to wrap around her." I actually do not know. I can not feel my leg." she answered, with a face that declared she was also in pain." I am going to drive back as fast as I can, hang in there!" Tom shouted.He turned the keys around, and the car did not start. He furiously tried again, but the same thing happened. He quickly looked at the gas-meter. It was empty."Damn it, we are out of gas!" He opened the door, and lifted Polly out. He carried her in his muscular arms, while he was quickly walking in the same direction they came from earlier. He looked down at Polly and saw she was not awake."Polly! Can you hear me?" Polly's face did not make a single expression, and her head just dangled, like if she had fainted. He started to walk faster."Help! Help!" Tom shouted in the wild, as he hoped someone would randomly be out there. He started to run, while tiny sweat was rolling down his forehead. "Golden...." Polly was trying to say something, but she could not force it out through her lips. "Need.. Golden.. seal" Tom did not understand Polly's mumbling."Polly, hang on!" cried Tom, while he was still yelling out for help.Polly tried to slowly open her eyes, but her eyelids were too heavy. She tried once again to force it out. "Goldenseal.. A herb.."Tom now remembered. Goldenseal is a herb, that grows in the wild, which cures infections if rubbed on the wound. He was suddenly getting exhausted, and he laid Polly down, and started to think. Polly was fainted. Tom could not remember how the herb, Goldenseal, did look like, but he was told about it once. He could feel he was dried out on the inside, and he had a great desire for water. He started to feel dizzy, and saw the world turn around him. His eyelids became heavier and heavier, but tried to stand up again, but failed and fell down on the face with a bump. He could slightly see, but he looked down at his leg, and saw a snakebite, and seconds after he could not resist. He fainted. A small buggy slowly went down the road. It stopped, as Ralph saw of two people lying down at the side of the road. Ralph jumped down, and slowly walked over to them. As he approached them, he slowly recognized Polly and Tom, but they looked kind of different."Oh god no! Polly!" cried Ralph, while he was shaking her body, to get life in her. But her body was lifeless, and so was Tom's.
