Langston Whitfield is a Washington Post journalist. That has been send to South Africa to cover the Truth and Reconciliation Commission hearings, in which the perpetrators of murder and torture during the Apartheid are invited to come and tell their story and confront their victims. By telling the whole truth and expressing the sorrow for the victims, they may be granted amnesty. Langston isn’t convinced that the deep wounds of Apartheid can be healed through reconciliation. With help from Dumi, Langston tracks down Colonel De Jager, the most famous torturer in the South African Police and tries to penetrate the mind of a monster. Anna Malan is an Afrikaans poet who is covering the hearing for radio. As a white South African she is shattered by the fact of the cruelty and moral corruption committed by her fellow Countrymen. Anna and Langston are both very moved by the testimony of the victims.

“The unfathomable depths of human cruelty and the redeeming power of forgiveness and love” quote from another review of the film.
