The short story is told from Alex's point of view and written in third person limited narrator.
The main theme in this short story is the transition from being a child into being an adult. The transition often involves confusion. The confusion mainly occurs because of the physical and physiological changes that appear through the years of transition. Alex is about to transit from being a child into being an adult. Above-mentioned may justify and explain Alex’s disturbed way of thinking.
Alex is pictured as a child at the approximate age of eleven however Alex’s actual age is not directly referred at any time. Above-mentioned is based on the facts that Alex is picked up by his mother, Alex needs a babysitter and Alex’s mother makes his sandwiches. “Opening the car door, he accidently bumped one of the mothers with his satchel. She turned, looking over her shoulder and then down to locate him” – also Alex is pictured as small. (Page 7, line 5-8)
The relationship between Alex and his mother is disturbingly close. They are very caring to one another. Especially Alex is very attentive to his mother. Alex is in need of his mother’s accept and attention. “Alex could smell her feet-smell, different from his own. It was sort of sweet as well as salty; sweet like old things. Maybe it was the tights that made them smell that way” – the attention is to confusion with infatuation. (Page 9, line 88-90)
