Boganmeldelse af 'Oliver Twist'

I have chosen to write about a book called Oliver Twist.

It's written by Charles Dickens who have also written “A Christmas carol”.

It was written in 1837 and published in 1838.

I think that the theme of Oliver Twist is poverty since Oliver is very poor child without any family to support him. The few illustrations in the book also show that most of the people at the time were very poor.

The story is about a boy named Oliver who is a parish child.

Oliver's mother died when he was born and therefore spends his first nine years of his life with an old lady called Mrs. Mann. She doesn’t treat him very well and spend most of the money she got from the parish on herself.

Around Oliver's ninth birthday, Mr. Bumble, who is a parish beadel, removes Oliver from Mrs. Mann so he can work at the workhouse.

He stays there for about six months until one day where the boys including himself are starving.

He asks for some more gruel which outrages the men of the workhouse. They offer five pounds to any person who want the boy as an apprentice. At first, a brutal looking man almost claims Oliver, but since he begs to not get sent away with the man, a kindly old magistrate refuses to to sign the indentures.
