Martin Luther King Jr. was an American pastor. He was a leader for the African American civil right movement. Know for his non-violent methods, inspired by Ghandi. He rallied peaceful protests and marches. He was good persuader, which made his speeches powerful to the people.
2. The early years of Martin Luther king Jr.
The church was a big part of his life, as both his father and grandfather had been Baptist preachers. They were also involved in the civil rights movement. He came from a reasonably comfortable background, from his time.
3. College
King skipped two high school grades and started college at the age of 15. He went to Morehouse College. He graduated 1948 with a degree in sociology. After considering careers in medicine and law, he entered the ministry. He studied at the Crozer Theological Seminary in Pennsylvania.
4. No Violence
It was while studying here, that King learned about the non-violent methods used by Gandhi against the British in India. King became convinced that such methods would be of great use to the civil rights movement.
5. After leaving Crozer
After leaving Crozer, King became a Baptist pastor at the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama. He also got married to Coretta Scott and they had 4 children. In Montgomery buses were segregated. On 1st December, 1955, Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat to a white man.
