Neil Perry is an intelligent, confident and popular student, who studies on Welton Academy. He is very popular and well liked among his friends and teachers. He has great leader potential, and his big passion is acting, but he is not permitted to fulfil his passion by his father who wants him to become a doctor, and refuse to let Neil make any decisions when it comes to his future. He also tells Neil to quit the newspaper, where he has a high position on. This makes Neil very upset, but he does not dare to argue with his father. Neil’s parents are very strict, or his father is. I don’t think his mother has too much to say in this.
Inspired by his new English teacher Mr. Keating, who was a member of the original Club, he restarts the ”Dead Poets Society Club” with his friends on Welton Academy. Neil now feels free and joyful again to refresh his interest in acting, and Mr. Keating encourages him to follow the saying, ”carpe diem” and follow his passion, acting.
Neil gets the opportunity to play a role in a play, and goes behind his fathers back. This makes his father go mental, and he decides that Neil should quit acting, and Welton Academy as well. He has to transfer to another school, to regain his focus and someday become a doctor, according to his father. And in an emotional rush of feelings, Neil thinks that his only option in order to gain control of his own life is to take his own life, so Neil committed suicide.
