Dead Poets Society is a novel written in 1989 by N. H. Kleinbaum. It is about the adventures of a group of boys in a well-respected all-boys prepatory school called Welton Academy, located in Vermont. The story begins at the start of a new school year where we are introduced to the characters of the book with a formal event, where the four ‘pillars,’ the main values of the school are introduced to the students. Everything seems to be going as planned, until it is time for their English lesson which is where they meet Mr. Keating for the first time. They notice from the get-go that this English teacher is no ordinary teacher. Mr. Keating decides to start the subject by showing the students the trophy room and attempts to grab the boys by the heart. Mr. Keating’s rebellious behavior in a very conservative school continues throughout the story, and it concerns the other teachers and Dean Nolan, as well as some of the students.One day, Neil Perry and his group of friends discover that Mr. Keating had been a part of a secret club called ‘Dead Poets Society’, which the boys decide to recreate. This secret society turns out to be a lot more complicated and has a much bigger impact on their lives than they had initially anticipated. The boys are influenced by the reckless attitude of Mr. Keating and especially the two words Keating emphasize the most, ‘Carpe Diem!’ This expression brings out the passion in the group of friends, which leads to them chasing their dreams and take action, rather than waiting for things to happen.
