Hyldest til Steve Biko

The death of the black activist, Steve Biko was on Monday, September 7th. The funeral was on Sunday September 25th. At the stadium where the ceremony was held, over a thousand people from all over South Africa, came to grief and celebrate the life of Steve Biko. The most part of the crowd was black people, and some were holding a poster with Steve Biko’s face on it, with the text: BLACK PEOPLE’S CONVENTION TRIBUTE TO THE LATE HONORARY PRESIDENT BANTU STEPHEN BIKO. Steve Biko’s children and wife, Ntsiki Biko, Helen Suzman, the representers of the British, American and Swedish government and people Biko was acquainted with, were standing on a big platform, with a microphone, on the side of the stadium.You could hear carol in the distance, as a group of boys in uniforms was singing and marching, followed by a group of priests. Behind them, Steve Biko’s coffin, followed up. The coffin was made out of dark wood with gold letters. ONE AZANIA…ONE NATION. People reached out their hands so they could touch the coffin. The coffin was placed in front of the platform covered in flowers. A young boy dressed in gold and brown, stepped on the platform and talked out to the crowd saying the words.“ I loved Steve biko, but I hate the system that killed him. The young boy raised his hands, and so the crowd imitated him and raised their hands. Then the stadium went completely quiet. The speaker talked to the crowd for five minutes about the system and Steve Biko. The crowd shouted, but at the same time they shouted in anger, they shouted with pride and determination. The speaker said the last the last words about Biko, and the crowd applaud him and some yelled “Amen”. The whole stadium then sang the song of Africa with their hands and posters of Steve Biko raised in the air. On the platform, Steve Biko’s wife stood with their child in her arms with tears in her eyes, as the whole stadium cried, saying goodbye to Bantu Stephen Biko. A hero for black people all over South Africa
