Comment on President Obama’s State of the Union Address

As always, President Obama’s speech is powerful and delivered with confidence. He starts out by mentioning average jobs and how regular people make an effort every day. At first I was surprised when he said ‘she’ instead of ‘he’ but pleasantly so. I rejoice at how far equality has come when I see such an important figurehead performing a speech where discrimination is so consciously avoided. He cleverly flatters the people by presenting all the progress that America has made over the last couple of years as the achievement of the American people alone. I am of two minds about this tactic as I find what he is doing painfully obvious. However, who is to say that it will not work on the general public? I just find it almost laughable that The President of the United States of America uses such blatant flattery to win the hearts of the people, but then again, if that is truly his opinion then I suppose I can’t criticize him for it. Later on in his address, he talks about the minimum wage and how the recession is almost over and that now is the time to help the American families get ahead. Here the American dream is brought into the picture and he talks about how anything is possible if you work hard and put in your best effort. The American dream is still very much alive, though a little battered and mistreated. President Obama believes that if they all work together to help each other out, that dream can be revived. I think it is a noble concept and that it inspires hope in otherwise hopeless lives, but I don’t think it can become reality. Not every American can make it big if he just puts his heart in it. That is just not how the world works.
