Analyse af Obamas tale om immigration

Life is not easy for everyone. Some people are lucky with no big problems in life, but other are not so lucky. Some people must leave their home country, in hopes of a better life in a country. Immigrating into another country would mean to leave everything behind to start a new life. There are several reasons immigrants would leave their home country, for example economic issues, political issues etc. For more than 200 years there have been millions of immigrants that have immigrated into America. But moving into another country does not always make life way easier than before since America’s immigration system is not flawless. People like business owners can exploit undocumented immigrants by paying them far less than average. The president, Barack Obama, talks about his thoughts on the current state of the immigration system and what he is going to fix in his speech "Fixing America's Broken Immigration System” (2014).

The speaker of this speech is Barack Hussein Obama. The 44th President of United States. He was the first African American president. He has an advantage in terms of ethos in his speech about the immigrant system, since he is the president of the country, who knows about the problem and flaws of the immigrant system. The speech was given in the White House, through television, where he talks about the immigration system which he calls broken. The subject of this speech is the immigration system, which is a very known topic in America. In his speech he talks about why the immigration system is broken like in the quote "Business owners who offer their workers good wages and benefits see the competition exploit undocumented immigrants by paying them far less". He also talks about what has been done so far, and what he is going to do about the system now. The primary group of this speech are the immigrants since he is talking about his concerns and solutions to fixing the immigrant system for example "So we’re going to offer the following deal: If you've been in America for more than five years; if you have children who are American citizens or legal residents; if you register, pass a criminal background check, and you're willing to pay your fair share of taxes — you'll be able to apply to stay in this country temporarily without fear of deportation.". He directly offers the immigrants a deal, therefore the primary audience of this speech are the immigrants. The main purpose of this speech is to inform and argue about the immigration system, for example in the quote: “Business owners who offer their workers good wages and benefits see the competition exploit undocumented immigrants by paying them far less.”, Where he informs them why he thinks the immigration system is broken and what he is going to do to fix it. "It's also not who we are as Americans. After all, most of these immigrants have been here a long time. They work hard, often in tough, low-paying jobs. They support their families. They worship at our churches. Many of their kids are American-born or spent most of their lives here, and their hopes, dreams, and patriotism are just like ours.” He also argues in his speech where he defends immigrants effectively making use of the form of appeal, pathos. "Our history and the facts show that immigrants are a net plus for our economy and our society. And I believe it's important that all of us have this debate without impugning each other's character." He also makes use of the form of appeal logos, where he argues whether the immigrants are a net plus for the economy and society or not.
