Barack Obama is famous for becoming the first African-American president of the United States. Obama is the 44th president of the United States, and his presidency is recognized for health care reform and economic stimulus legislation. Obama initially received notice for his well-delivered speech during the 2004 at the Democratic National Convention, at which point many Americans became familiar with him and started following his career.

In 2008 Barack Obama was elected to be the presidential candidate for the Democrats. As a symbol of his gratitude for the country´s faith in him as a president, he held a speech entitled “The American Promise”. But what defines the American promise? Barack Obama himself defines it as: “The idea that we are responsible for ourselves, but that we also rise or fall as one nation; the fundamental belief that I am my brother´s keeper; I am my sister´s keeper.” (p.109, ll.34-36)

This speech was held at the Democratic convention on August 28 in 2008, Denver Colorado, for supporters of the Democratic. The speech was also shown in TV, so the rest of the US citizens could hear and see the chosen Democrat as well.

The level of complexity in the language that Obama uses in his speech is moderate small. He kept the language understandably with easy and simple words in sentences, however he still at sometimes shows his sufficiently academic language usage. For example he says:”…is that in America, our destiny is inextricably linked.”(p.110, l. 28). The citizens in America whether they have no education or a master degree will understand the overall meaning and message as a whole, but the word “inextricably” is just part of a richer vocabulary which basically means nothing in the big picture in order to understand the overall meaning.
