In the movie “American Beauty” Carolyn has a motto she lives by and that motto is: In order to be successful, one must project an image of success at all time. The keyword being “one must project an image”. I have ambivalent feelings towards this quote. On one hand if you project an image of success and people believe that image, does that not make you successful in a way? But looking like you have everything under control, does that mean you do? Carolyn is projecting an image at all times, but in reality her world is falling to pieces. She has everyone fooled by her image of being this perfectionist who has everything under control and has a perfect family. And that is exactly what she wants, people believing the image. She pretends to have a happy marriage, a perfect family etc, and as long as people believe that, she doesn’t mind it not being true.
Mr. Fitts appears as a homophobic soldier who used to serve the US Marine Corps, and who believes in strong discipline. He beats his son Ricky if he does anything, that in mr. Fitts eyes are wrong. But again, that is also just what he appears to be.. In that scene you see who mr. Fitts really are. It is scientifically proven the more homophobic you are, the more insecurities or doubts do you have about one’s own sexuality. Mr. Fitts are a great example of that, you see him beat Ricky, because he thought Ricky was gay and throw him out of the house, then later you see him walking out in pouring rain in a t-shirt, going to his neighbor Lester Burnham’s garage to kiss Lester.
